From The Archive: 2014

A year full time and city guides a-plenty, my first venture into YouTube and a baby puppy addition- 2014 was an exciting one!

The one where I went to the hairdressers…

It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of the hairdressers. Ever since I’ve ever had a colour or cut that hasn’t been in the comfort of my own kitchen (perks of having a barber as a dad) it has never gone completely to plan, and anyone that knew me during my teen years will be totally familiar with my hair being a range of pillar box red, a strange indigo brown colour and lots of Fairy liquid/Head and Shoulders colour removing shampoo sessions (sorry mum) with a crazy side fringe to match.

The last salon trip I took was to a little salon in around 2011 called Myla and Davis. Based just outside of Herne Hill station, I went there after discovering it over Twitter and falling in love with what I’d heard. After sitting in the chair, my stylist Zina left me with the first colour I’d probably ever been happy with and I left on the train home with a spring in my step… and ahem, a shine in my hair.

Fast forward three years and you have a girl who happily fell back into old ways of kitchen trim-ups and colour sessions (Papa P does do a top job y’know) but who hadn’t had a lot of hair TLC in a long time- and someone who was grossly unfamiliar with a heat protection spray- oops. Anyway! Last week I was invited back to Myla & Davis, in their new East Dulwich salon, for a conditioning treatment and styling session- and I couldn’t have been more nervous. Moments before I went in, Joe declared ‘why are you doing this? You’re never happy with how people style your hair’ (#thinhairprobs) and I began to worry a little bit more. What a fooligan I was!

After going in with little to no idea of what I actually wanted- the lovely Vicky helped me reach a decision (a bit of a trim and condition with a bit of shape at the front), I came out feeling a hundred times happier with my barnet (there was a lot of swooshing)- and have even booked a second appointment for a dash of colour in the next couple of weeks- which I’m pretty sure speaks volumes.

With a chat about the best products to use (including some seriously tasty Bumble & Bumble numbers) I left feeling that hairdressers really aren’t that scary and I could perhaps make this a bit of a regular thing, plus, there’s a Franco Manca opening near by- so if that hasn’t converted me I don’t know what will…

You can visit Myla & Davis here– I promise they’re worth it, trust me, I wouldn’t tell you otherwise!
